The United States established diplomatic relations with Nepal on 25 April 1947, the second country to do so after the United Kingdom. US development help began with a 1951 'Point Four' agreement, and Peace Corps volunteers have worked in Nepal since 1962. Today the US is the largest market for Nepali goods after India, the second-largest source of tourists, and home to more than 400,000 Nepalis, according to Nepal's foreign ministry. The MCC compact and its interpretive declarationएमसीसी सम्झौता र यसको व्याख्यात्मक घोषणा

As reported by The Himalayan Times, the declaration Parliament attached says, among other points, that Nepal will not be part of any US strategic, military or security alliance, including the Indo-Pacific Strategy; that the Constitution of Nepal prevails over the compact; that the Auditor General audits MCA-Nepal's funds; that Nepal may end the compact with 30 days' written notice if its activities violate Nepal's laws; and that Nepal owns the transmission project's assets and land.
