The relationship

For most Nepali families the Middle East means work. Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia all established diplomatic relations with Nepal in 1977, and the Gulf countries are the destination for most new labour permits. Nepal's foreign ministry estimated in March 2026 that about 1.8 million Nepalis live in West Asia. Trade is small and one-sided, and Gulf development funds are small lenders. Because so many people depend on these jobs, labour agreements, workers' safety and getting people home in a crisis are the main issues. What we could not confirm
