What does it do?

  • When the Government wants someone else to run a service inside a national park or reserve, it must invite sealed tenders in the main newspapers, giving at least 35 days, and normally accept the bid offering the highest royalty; a lower bid may be accepted only with reasons recorded. Any construction needs a detailed project report approved by the Government, and an environmental study is required. Each warden must prepare a management plan for the Department's approval, and a new one at least a year before the current plan ends. Nepal Law Commission Rules 3(1)-(5) and 3A(1)-(7), PDF pp. 2-4
  • Even with a licence, no one may hunt a pregnant female or one with young, during the closed season, or at night (from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise). Automatic weapons, explosive or poisoned ammunition and silenced guns may never be used. Nepal Law Commission Rules 5, 6(1) and 7(क), PDF pp. 4-6

Licences cannot be transferred, must be carried while hunting, and must be returned with the hunting register within 35 days of expiry. Nepal Law Commission Rules 8, 9(1)-(2), 13(2), 17, 18, 19 and 20, PDF pp. 6-7, 10, 12

Zoos, wildlife rescue centres and wildlife hospitals also need a licence, decided by the Ministry. Nepal Law Commission Rules 36B(1)-(10) and 36D(1)-(5), PDF pp. 20-23
