What the law asks of the police

• The Constitution provides that the Federation shall have the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, Nepal and the National Investigation Department, and that each province shall have a provincial police organisation. • The Police Act, 2012 (1955) provides for one or more police forces whose size, pay and conditions the Government of Nepal sets. The government supervises, controls and directs the police, and police administration is the responsibility of the Inspector General of Police and other senior officers. • The Nepal Police and Province Police (Operation, Supervision and Coordination) Act, 2076 sets out the Nepal Police's functions (including keeping peace and security, preventing and controlling crime, and protecting designated persons, places and projects) and the offences it investigates. • In its proactive disclosure for Baisakh-Asar 2083, the Nepal Police says it operates through Police Headquarters, provincial offices in all seven provinces (each headed by a Deputy Inspector General), and offices in 77 districts and at 753 local levels. What the Auditor General found

• The Auditor General found that the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force provided more personal security guards to serving and former office-holders than the 2081 procedure allows. • The Auditor General notes that the Police Act, 2012 and the Police Regulations, 2071 have still not been updated for the federal structure. Bills (2081) to amend and consolidate the laws on the Nepal Police and on the Armed Police Force were registered in the Federal Parliament Secretariat but had not become law. • According to the figures the Auditor General received, recorded road accidents rose from 22,927 in FY 2080/81 to 43,965 in FY 2081/82 (91.76 per cent), with 2,549 deaths. • The Auditor General found that Police Headquarters spent Rs 464.1 million on 36 software, hardware and licence contracts without having the software certified by the Department of Information Technology as the IT directive requires. • Construction of the National Police Academy at Panauti, Kavrepalanchok (a Rs 10.02 billion contract excluding VAT, due by 2082-03-19 BS) is behind schedule, the Auditor General reports. • In Kathmandu Valley, the Auditor General found that 1,113 traffic police were deployed, meaning each had about 1,787 vehicles to manage, and that traffic lights at 22 of 65 installed locations were broken and needed repair. Chief District Officers

The Ministry of Home Affairs publishes an online telephone directory that can be filtered to 'Chief District Officer'. On 2026-10-11 it returned 73 entries for 77 districts. It shows no 'last updated' date, and MoHA transfer notices of 2083-06-15 and 2083-06-23 BS posted new Chief District Officers to Udayapur and Arghakhanchi who were not yet listed.
