What does it do?

• The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal is responsible for running and coordinating search and rescue for aircraft in the Kathmandu Flight Information Region, which covers all airspace within Nepal's borders. Airlines must fit every aircraft registered in Nepal and flying in Nepali airspace with an emergency locator transmitter, and the transmitter must be registered in a recognised international database.काठमाडौं उडान सूचना क्षेत्र, अर्थात् नेपालको भौगोलिक सीमाभित्रको सम्पूर्ण हवाई क्षेत्रमा वायुयानको खोज तथा उद्धार सेवा सञ्चालन र समन्वय गर्ने जिम्मेवारी नेपाल नागरिक उड्डयन प्राधिकरणको हुन्छ। नेपालमा दर्ता भई नेपाली आकाशमा उड्ने प्रत्येक वायुयानमा वायुसेवा सञ्चालन संस्थाले ईमरजेन्सी लोकेटर ट्रान्समिटर जडान गर्नुपर्छ र त्यो मान्यताप्राप्त अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय डाटाबेसमा दर्ता भएको हुनुपर्छ। Nepal Law Commission Rule 2(ग), PDF p. 1; Rules 3 and 4(1)-(2), PDF p. 2
• Any person or organisation that thinks an aircraft is missing or in serious distress in the Kathmandu Flight Information Region must immediately tell the Rescue Coordination Centre, an airport, a civil aviation office, an air traffic services unit, the District Administration Office, a police office or the local level. • A Rescue Coordination Centre at Tribhuvan International Airport must have trained staff available 24 hours a day, keep a plan ready and start search and rescue as soon as it hears of a missing or distressed aircraft. The Rescue Coordination Committee may deploy aircraft, equipment and people of the Nepali Army and airlines. • The airline whose aircraft went missing or got into distress must pay the cost of the search and rescue. After each operation the Rescue Coordination Centre must report to the Director General, covering the equipment, resources and people used, the costs, the problems met and improvements needed. • A National Coordination Committee chaired by the minister responsible for civil aviation, with secretaries of several ministries, the heads of the police, Armed Police Force and Army, and the Director General as member-secretary, sets search and rescue policy and directs agencies to fix weaknesses. The Ministry names a national contact person for international coordination.
