Decoration Act, 2064

What does it do?

• The government may confer state honours (decorations) on Nepali citizens who have made outstanding contributions in political, economic, social, cultural, research and other fields of national life, and on foreigners of international renown or who have contributed to Nepal. Decorations are given on a national day chosen by the government, and the names, the honour and the person's contribution are made public and published in the Nepal Gazette.राष्ट्रिय जीवनका राजनीतिक, आर्थिक, सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक, अन्वेषणात्मकलगायतका क्षेत्रमा विशिष्ट योगदान पुर्‍याउने नेपाली नागरिकलाई, र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय ख्यातिप्राप्त वा नेपालको हितमा योगदान पुर्‍याउने विदेशीलाई नेपाल सरकारले विभूषण प्रदान गर्न सक्छ। विभूषण सरकारले तोकेको राष्ट्रिय दिवसका दिन प्रदान गरिन्छ, र पाउनेको नाम, विभूषणको प्रकार र उसको योगदानसहितको सूचना सार्वजनिक गरी नेपाल राजपत्रमा प्रकाशित गरिन्छ। Nepal Law Commission, Government of Nepal Section 3, pp. 1–2
• A Decoration Committee chaired by the senior Deputy Prime Minister (or the senior-most minister), with the Home Minister and six people of distinguished contribution named by the Cabinet on an inclusive basis (including women), and the Home Secretary as member-secretary, recommends recipients to the Cabinet. • Recommendations must be based on set grounds, such as raising the nation's prestige, outstanding work in one's field, commendable performance of official duty, or a brave or wise act for the public good. • Nepali citizens need government approval before accepting a title, honour or decoration from a foreign country. No organisation or person may award a decoration with the same name, design or form as a state decoration. The government may revoke a decoration, for example if the holder takes up arms against Nepal, helps an enemy state or spies against Nepal, and a holder may voluntarily return it.विदेशी मुलुकबाट दिइने उपाधि, सम्मान वा विभूषण ग्रहण गर्नुअघि नेपाली नागरिकले नेपाल सरकारको स्वीकृति लिनुपर्छ। सरकारले दिने विभूषणजस्तै नाम, बनोट र आकृतिको विभूषण कुनै संस्था वा व्यक्तिले दिन पाउँदैन। नेपालविरुद्ध हतियार उठाएमा, शत्रु राज्यलाई सहयोग गरेमा वा नेपालविरुद्ध जासुसी गरेमाजस्ता अवस्थामा सरकारले विभूषण रद्द गर्न सक्छ, र पाउनेले स्वेच्छाले फिर्ता गर्न पनि सक्छ। Nepal Law Commission, Government of Nepal Sections 19, 24, 26–27, pp. 7–8
